Last year we welcomed home our little boy, Teddy who will be turning 1 soon and with our new focus on helping our pup parents more directly, I thought it would be a good idea to share the puppy buys that were useful and worth their weight in gold!

Teething toys
Having teethers on hand can and will save the day. It doesn't matter if you're at home, or out and about, these little miracle workers are an absolute essential to keep on hand at all times for your growing pup. We used the nylabone teething keys. Now I must add that I would not usually recommend plastic/ nylon toys at all for adult dogs or youngsters HOWEVER for teething pups, they come in very hand for a short few weeks of their lifetime to prevent nipping, If you prefer you could use the matchstick teething toy which is FG silicon with an anti-microbial coating.

2. Luggage & kitchen scales - If like Teddy was, your pup is too small to register on Large scales or if your scales don't have a tear function putting them in a bag and weighing them is fuss +
fidget free - and accurate of course! We recommend weighing each week and adjusting their food intake accordingly. the kitchen scales will help you give the right amount of
food as they grow each week.

3. Carrier/Pet stroller - As we did not wish to over-vaccinate Teddy, we waited til Ted was 14 weeks for his vaccine ( 1 x DHP). Having a buggy/carrier makes socialising Teddy and bringing him out and about so much easier for us, We bought both - but I honestly used the buggy much more as it appeared to be more comfortable for him.

4. Compostable Grooming Wipes - Great for muddy paws, wet bums/ tums- and a freshening up between baths. We used the earth rated ones daily and still do! When looking for compostable wipes ensure they conform to these codes; ASTM D6400 ASTM D6868 EN 13432 ISO 17088, Alternatively, you could use reusable wipes like those sold by Lndesigns. UK
5. Bamboo Feeding Plate - Ever since Darcy had gone through her fussy eating phase, we've always found bamboo plates a better way to feed. But there is a science behind them as Flat feeding is also a much more natural way for dogs to eat (fussy eating article to be released soon!) They also make for cute food/feeding pics! bamboo is naturally anti-microbial and has no harsh chemicals that could leech into the food!
6. All For Paws snuggle Sheep - Teddy would not have been without his nor would we! The times he had gone down for the night and screamed/cried but once the sheep Went on - he was down for the count in minutes. It was a true gem so much so we got 2 - so we always had a backup!
7. Blankets - plenty at that! we have so many dog beds in my house - that! just couldn't justify buying a puppy bed that
would likely be ruined by chewing or toilet mishaps and quickly outgrown Instead, we made beds out of blankets -which can easily and quickly be washed, and routinely his bed was changed and crate disinfected, always have a stack of blankets on top of the crate ready to go.

8. Slippery Elm - a must-have for all dog owners but most definitely for puppies too. This is a magic herb for settling tummies and stopping diarrhoea and or sickness quickly. If your puppy is particularly sensitive, I would recommend trying marshmallow root powder instead as this is much more gentle and more mucilaginous too! A loose powder is best - always buy sustainably.

10. Puppy Pen - Even though I already had a crate for
our nighttime routine, I quickly found that a puppy pen would be a good idea to keep Teddy in whilst I needed to get on with housework/work. I wanted him to have more space than a crate during these short moments and so the playpen came in very handy. It can be manipulated to different sizes and comes with a door with double bolts.

10. Four seasons intestinal tincture or Panacur - It must be first stated that I would not worm with Panacur unless we received A high worm burden from the lab. Instead of routinely with harsh chemicals "Just in case"we worm count periodically and keep a syringe of Panacur which is the least harmful chemical wormer to give. For low to medium burdens, I use the four seasons tincture from All Natural Pet tincture which both prevents and treats worms. It can be given to puppies from 3 weeks old. You can find

11. Nail Grinder - Keeping our dog's nails trimmed and at the right length is essential to the good health of their paws and if they're too long they can cause discomfort. A lot of dogs don't like nail clipping, many preferring to have them filed - and if you start this practice from a young age, this sets you up for a lifetime of nail clipping success! we've had a few grinders but by far the best and the only one that can adequately manage both puppy nails and adult dogs nails is the one sold by Dremel.
12. Tooth Brush/Tooth Wipes - Darcy has never enjoyed having her teeth cleaned with a brush and so we found dental wipes a lot easier. But with puppies, like nail trimming, it's crucial to start the practice young so they become used to having their teeth touched and mouths examined.
